Robotic rectosigmoidectomy: pioneer case report in Brazil. Current scene in colorectal robotic surgery

Abstract: Laparoscopic colorectal surgery is believed to be technically and oncologically feasible. Robotic surgery is an attractive mode in performing minimally-invasive surgery once it has several advantages if compared to standard laparoscopic surgery. The aim of this paper is to report the first known case of colorectal resection surgery using the robotic assisted surgical device in Brazil. A 35-year-old woman with deep infiltrating endometriosis with rectal involvement was referred for colorectal resection using da… Show more

“…The surgery, which lasted 5 h, was uneventful and no postoperative complications were observed. The patient left the hospital on the fifth postoperative day 27 . In our experience ( n = 7 women), we observed a reduced procedure time (average of 210 min) using robotic‐assisted and standard laparoscopic surgery.…”

“…178 Given the high cost of purchasing and maintaining a robotic system, minimising additional costs associated with increased operation duration was perceived by some as essential for ensuring that RAS is integrated into routine practice. 147,179 Overall, there was broad agreement in the perception that operation duration decreases as experience increases, with this often being attributed to a decrease in set-up time. 145,147,180 Thus, the underlying theory is that when the team is experienced and well trained, their knowledge and experience enables them to quickly undertake the tasks required for setting up the robot.…”
