Robust Control Design of a Human Heart Rate System for Cardiac Rehabilitation Exercise

Abstract: Automatic, precise, and accurate heart rate control during treadmill exercise is an interesting topic among researchers. The human heart is a highly nonlinear system. Conventional control techniques are not sufficient and it is difficult to accurately model the human heart. Two different robust controllers were designed for this nonlinear system. Firstly, sliding mode control (SMC) was implemented; SMC is robust against parametric uncertainties and external disturbance but its robustness is not guaranteed duri… Show more

“…As heart rate (HR) is commonly used to set exercise intensity (Liguori et al, 2022), this has inspired research into HR control systems. In conventional HR control systems using treadmills (TM) (Verrelli et al, 2021;Wang et al, 2021;Abbasi et al, 2022;Wang and Hunt, 2023a), the TM speed is solely determined by the controller. However, this constraint increases safety risks for neurologically impaired patients and may cause unwanted interruptions during testing.…”

“…Accurately tracking trajectories is a challenging task for control engineers. Designing controllers for real-life problems is demanding due to the nonlinear nature of the system [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. Real systems are affected by perturbations, which are the sum of system uncertainties, modeling errors, and external disturbances.…”
