Robust Fuzzy Fault Detection and Isolation Approach Applied to Surge in Centrifugal Compressor Modeling and Control

Abstract: This work presents the results of applying an advanced fault detection and isolation technique to centrifugal compressor; this advanced technique uses physics models of the centrifugal compressor with a fuzzy modeling and control solution method. The fuzzy fault detection and isolation has become an issue of primary importance in modern process engineering automation as it provides the prerequisites for the task of fault detection. In this work, we present an application of this approach in fault detection and… Show more

“…A few years ago, the associate gases in the pipeline transportation was evacuated towards the torches since the structure of recovery of these gases was not economically profitable [21][22][23][24]. The installations of gas compression, as the case with Hassi Messaoud in Algeria with the advent of certain machines which can treat enormous quantities of gas, not only enable us to recover these gases but also to increase the quantities of gas transportation.…”

“…To illustrate the efficiency of the proposed fuzzy method, experimental results of the fuzzy supervision for a compression system are provided. We note that this work is a first step in accessing the factors that affect the success of surge control in natural gas pipeline compression system [8], [9], [10], [11], [12], [13] and [14].…”

“…In recent years fuzzy logic has been an active area of research, many research efforts have been focused on fuzzy modelling and control issues based on the Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy model [2][3] [8] and [12], which is described by fuzzy IF-THEN rules. For a nonlinear system that is transformed successfully into a T-S fuzzy model, the stability of the overall nonlinear system still cannot be guaranteed even if each subsystem of the T-S fuzzy model is stable.…”

“…In this sense, several works have been carried out in the literature presenting the main challenges of the proposed diagnosis approaches in energy plants, (gas turbine, gas compressor, centrifugal chiller, turbomachinery…etc. ), such as fault detection and diagnostics tool based on a data fault library, application to an automated chiller [7], Effect of common faults on the performance of different types of vapor compression systems [8], A statistical fault detection and diagnosis method for centrifugal chillers based on exponentiallyweighted moving average control charts and support vector regression [9], the performance diagnosis of gas turbine compressors based on component map tuning method [10], diagnostics of gas turbine for a high bypass ratio military turbofan engine based on artificial neural-networks [11], Active surge control for variable speed axial compressors [12], and fault-diagnoses based on evolution strategy (a simple genetic-based algorithm and fuzzy approaches) for gas turbocompressor systems [13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21]. Based on these research works, it is obvious that the research on the gas turbine and gas compressor systems are actually a very highlighted research topic.…”
