Phasor measurement units (PMUs) in a transmission grid provide time stamped signals of the system state in real time. This information is a snapshot of overall grid under observation. It is vital to decide the system state and immediate action that follows. PMUs collectively avoid the requirement of load flow studies under emergency conditions. It is identified that, distribution feeders are also important with its optimal placement of PMUs. Further, PMU installation will convert existing feeder into a smart distribution system. Hence, optimal PMU placement problem is solved for a 11kV 70-node distribution feeder. Mixed integer programming (MIP) problem and solution is discussed for the system under reconfiguration.
