In this chapter, the active power filters are discussed. In Sect. 3.1, the development of active power filters are reviewed; active power filters with different circuit configurations are given and compared. The three-phase four-wire active power filter using a two level four-leg voltage source inverter (VSI) is discussed in Sect. 3.2. Three-phase four-wire active power filters using two-level and three-level three-leg center-split VSI are discussed in Sect. 3.3. The modeling, voltage control signal calculation, space vector analyses and pulse width modulation (PWM) methods for each configuration are introduced and addressed in these two Sections. Furthermore, dc link voltage variation control of the center-split VSI is discussed in Sect. 3.3. In Sect. 3.4, the operational principal of three-phase four-wire multi-level VSIs as active power filter is briefly introduced. In Sect. 3.5, the generalized PWM for multi-level three-leg center-split and four-leg VSIs are introduced. Finally, the design and implementation of an active power filter is introduced in Sect. 3.6.
