Robust induction of interferon and interferon-stimulated gene expression by influenza B/Yamagata lineage virus infection of A549 cells

Abstract: Influenza B virus (IBV) belongs to the Orthomyxoviridae family and generally causes sporadic epidemics but is occasionally deadly to individuals. The current research mainly focuses on clinical and pathological characteristics of IBV. However, to better prevent or treat the disease, one must determine the strategies developed by IBV to invade and disrupt cellular proteins and approach to replicate itself, to suppress antiviral innate immunity, and understand how the host responds to IBV infection. The B/Shangh… Show more

“…In addition, replication was tested in A549 cells, a tumor cell line described to retain intact IFN pathways. 36 , 37 Again, the triple deletion mutant virus combining C10L , N2L , and C6L gene deletions efficiently grew in this cancer cell line, showing no difference in viral progeny production compared to the WR/TK− control virus ( Figure S2 ).
Figure 2 Unimpaired replication and capacity to kill cancer cells of mutant VACV accumulating deletions in genes inhibiting the IRF3 signaling pathway (A and B) Productive multiplication of deletion mutant viruses.

“…Notably, type-I IFN acts on cells during viral infections to inhibit viral replication [ 22 ]. Indeed, a recent study revealed the expression of these genes in A549 cells infected by influenza virus [ 23 ].…”
