Robust Variable Structure Controller Design for Fault Tolerant Flight Control

Abstract: A model following control scheme is proposed that possesses fault detection and isolation capabilities as well as a fault tolerance property. The proposed model following controller is designed based on a variable structure control (VSC), and the scheme does not require the parameter estimation process for recon gurable control. The main idea of the proposed algorithm stems from the fact that the nonlinear control of VSC counteracts external disturbances. The proposed algorithm is shown to be very useful for t… Show more

“…A reconfigurable SMC that achieves robust tracking after damage in an aircraft has been designed in [295] and [296]. A MF scheme, based on VSC, that possesses a fault tolerance property has been proposed by [160]. The combination of integral SMC methodology and observers with hypothesis testing has been used for FTC of a spark ignition engine in [162].…”

“…Those are sliding mode controller, back-stepping control, predictive control, neural networks, fuzzy logic, and expert system (Handelman and Stengel, 1989). Several researchers have successfully designed a fault tolerant controller based on the sliding mode control scheme (Shtessel, Buffington and Banda, 1999;Kim and Kim, 2000;Hess and Wells, 2003). The fault tolerant controller based on the sliding mode control scheme does not require the control redesign process although, it can detect and isolate the faults.…”

“…For LTI systems, the passive approach can be treated as a simultaneous stabilization or robust H ∞ design [9]. Meanwhile, for nonlinear systems, a variable structure control (sliding mode) methodology can be applied [10]. On the other hand, the active approach relies on a fault diagnosis stage, followed by a controller reconfiguration or accommodation [6].…”
