Rockburst Monitoring in Deep Coalmines with Protective Coal Panels Using Integrated Microseismic and Computed Tomography Methods

Abstract: In deep coalmines, longwall panels are subject to high static initial geostress andhigh dynamic stress caused by mining and tunnelling activities. Under the action of high static and dynamic stress, rockburst hazards are very likely to occur. To reduce rockburst risks, protective panels are commonly applied in deep coalmines. However, stress concentration in the protective coal panel often causes rockburst hazards in the gateway of the next longwall panel pending mining. To reduce such type of rockburst, this … Show more

“…In many mining areas of Shandong, Henan, Anhui, Hebei, and other provinces, thick and hard rock strata exist which are characterized by great thicknesses, high strength levels, and good integrity [1][2][3]. e fracture movements of thick and hard rock strata overlying mining stopes can potentially cause different degrees of mining earthquakes and induce dynamic behaviors, such as rock bursts.…”

“…Production rates of open pits have progressively grown over the last 100 years and they will continue growing in the future [5][6][7][8][9][10][11]. e ultimate slopes of an open-pit mine are generally excavated to the steepest possible angle, as the economic consequences of the excavation angle are significant; for instance, for large scale open pits, changes in slope angle by approximately 2-3°can be measured in hundreds of millions of dollars in project value [3,12].…”

“…Mining an isolated coal pillar left due to striping mining or unreasonable mining layout with filling method is an inevitable choice for resource-exhausted mining areas [1][2][3]. With complicated structure of overlying strata on isolated coal pillar, mining coal seam can probably induce the change of the spatial structure and occurrence of rock burst [4][5][6][7][8].…”
