Role and importance of Doppler ultrasound in the diagnosis of pulmonary sequestration: Report of two adolescent cases.

Abstract: Pulmonary sequestration is a rare pulmonary parenchymal anomaly. The localization of the aberrant artery and its relation with sequestration are of importance in the process of diagnosis in the preoperative period. The feeding artery can be identified by color Doppler ultrasonography. We report two cases of pulmonary sequestration in two adolescents, aged 11 and 13 years old, and this report documents the use of in which color Doppler ultrasound demonstrated the abnormal feeding artery. Color Doppler ultrasono… Show more

“…One specific ultrasonographic sign is the tortuous, large vessels with pulsatile blood flow within the mass. This sign has already been observed in previous human reports, where ultrasonography revealed that intra-mass abnormal vessels had large lumen diameters measuring 1–12 mm ( 14 , 29 , 38 , 43 , 46 ). Arterial supply to PC is acquired via the large abnormal vessels derived from systemic vessels, most commonly including the descending thoracic and abdominal aorta ( 4 , 9 , 13 , 14 , 21 , 27 , 30 ).…”

“…Two previous human cases with intralobar pulmonary sequestration had congenital defects, including intravertebral fusion in their cervical vertebras, separate from the locations of this disease ( 28 ). Congenital neuro-vertebral and foregut anomalies may be synchronized, resulting in neural arch defects (such as spina bifida and hemivertebrae) and formation of pulmonary sequestration due to developing at the same embryological stages ( 28 , 29 ). In bovine fetuses, the formation of supernumerary lung buds, as an origin of PC, may occur between days 30 to 50 of gestation ( 9 , 26 ).…”

“…7 Although color Doppler ultrasound is not the gold standard of diagnosis, due to its noninvasive nature and the absence of ionizing radiation, it should also be considered an extremely valuable diagnostic method. Büyükkaya et al 8 In such patients, normally, when the pressure in the abnormal supplying artery is similar to that in the pulmonary artery, the pulmonary vein and pulmonary capillary inner network pressure are normal and there are no obvious symptoms; as the pulmonary vein and pulmonary capillary pressure gradually increase, the capillaries and pulmonary veins rupture and symptoms such as coughing and coughing up blood can occur. 9 Looking at the medical examination data of this patient in the previous 3 years, no significant abnormal signal shadow was seen in the left lower lung of the chest CT imaging picture, and this chest CT showed normal bronchial distribution in the lower lobe of the left lung, no significant cystic solid mass shadow, and other sequestration of lung imaging manifestations.…”

“…Although color Doppler ultrasound is not the gold standard of diagnosis, due to its noninvasive nature and the absence of ionizing radiation, it should also be considered an extremely valuable diagnostic method. Büyükkaya et al 8 reported cases of adolescents with pulmonary isolation in which color Doppler ultrasound played a crucial role in the diagnosis and determination of the treatment plan. The application of color Doppler ultrasound allows clear visualization of the abnormal blood flow spectrum, thus showing that the combined use of ultrasound and CT greatly increases the accuracy of diagnosis.…”

“…Color Doppler shows blood flow signal. Pulse wave Doppler shows high-speed and high-resistance blood flow, suggesting that blood flow originated from the systemic circulation [47]. Affected by the gas in the adjacent lung, it is often difficult to visualize the origin of the artery.…”
