Role of Aloe Vera as A Natural Feed Additive in Broiler Production

Abstract: Phytogenic feed additives have replaced the use of antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) in the diet of poultry particularly broiler chickens. Researchers are moving towards the use of natural products such as herbs, spices, plants and plant products, which possess influential effects on growth performance parameters, immune response and treatment of various diseases. Aloe vera is a well-known medicinal plant and is being used for commercial and therapeutic purposes such as antimicrobials, antitumor, anti-inflamma… Show more

“…Phytogenic additives are applied in the modern poultry industry for their beneficial and promoting influences on the growth performance, immune response, and resistance against farming stressors ( 7 ). Several studies were conducted to investigate the potential role of Aloe vera in poultry production as feed additives or through drinking water ( 8 ). The obtained results showed marked growth performance, feed efficiency, biochemical blood indices, and oxidation resistance.…”

“…Phytogenics and herbals and their extracts and essential oils manifested appetite-stimulating, growth-promoting, and immunostimulatory activities in poultry production ( 7 ). A particular focus has been given to Aloe vera as natural immunostimulants and antioxidant agents in poultry production ( 8 ). Aloe vera is a tropical plant belonging to the Liliaceae family and is well-known for its therapeutic and remedial properties associated with its content of bioactive components ( 9 ).…”

“…Plant and plant extracts have traditionally played a vital role in the wellbeing and healthcare of humans and animals as therapeutic agents for the treatment of many illnesses. Due to essence, flavor, antimicrobial, and preservative properties, plant secondary metabolites have been used by mankind since early history (Giannenas et al, 2020;Akram et al, 2019a;Jalal et al, 2019). EOs and their components are hydrophobic, a feature that allows them to penetrate the lipidic layer of bacteria resulting in the disturbance of cell osmotic pressure by interrupting membrane integrity and ion transport process (Florou-Paneri et al, 2019).…”

“…The MPs form a significant component of the environmentally friendly agricultural practices currently promoted, such as organic and sustainable agriculture, to protect the environment. Smallholder farmers in South Africa use a variety of MPs like sorghum (Sorghum bicolour) and aloe species such as Aloe spicata, Aloe ferox and Aloe vera to treat a wide range of VCDs (Jalal et al 2019;Ndlovu et al 2021;Seidavi et al 2021). The perceived ability of indigenous MPs to treat poultry ailments with less, and at times without, side effects than conventional medicines indicates the potential for their commercialisation and the level of preference by local poultry farmers.…”
