Role of anodic oxide films in the corrosion of aluminum and its alloys

Abstract: Anodic oxide films on aluminum are classified into two groups: porous-type anodic oxide films (PAOF) and barrier-type anodic oxide films (BAOF). The present paper is a review of the corrosion of pure aluminum (Al) and Al alloys covered with PAOF and BAOF, focusing on the role of anodic oxide films in the process of corrosion. Several topics are discussed in detail, including (a) changes in the dissolution mode of PAOF in acidic media by pore sealing, (b) hydration and dissolution of BAOF in pure water and neut… Show more

“…Due to the high chemical activity of the aluminum element, a dense Al 2 O 3 film is formed on the surface of the aluminum sheet. The existence of the Al 2 O 3 film on the surface of the aluminum sheet avoids the direct exposure of the aluminum sheet to the SSC environment, which reduces the erosion of the aluminum sheet by the salt spray particles [ 35 , 36 , 37 ]. At the same time, the Al 2 O 3 film separates the aluminum sheet and the titanium sheet, which reduces the electrochemical corrosion caused by the direct contact between the two connected sheets.…”

“…The defects can be the Al 9 Co 2 /(Al) interfaces and/or (Al)-grain boundaries where AlFeSi intermetallics reside [40]. Hydrogen evolution during the preceding cathodic polarization may also have caused damage to the surface film existing at E corr [51,52]. More specifically, stage 1 is governed by ionic migration across the pre-existent surface film [53].…”

“…This blocking action does not, however, ensure inhibition of localized corrosion. The latter depends on the defects present in the structure of the surface film [50] that can be numerous [52]. This film is a porous-type anodic film, with a barrier layer at the metal/film interface and numerous imperfections [54].…”

“…The chemical reaction during pore sealing in hot water is expressed in Equation (1) [ 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 ]. Al 2 O 3 + (1 + 2x)H 2 O→2AlOOH·xH 2 O M. Kohda et al [ 21 ] determined the value of x by gravimetry and obtained x = 1–2.…”
