Role of Cryptomelane in Surface-Adsorbed Oxygen and Mn Chemical Valence in MnOx during the Catalytic Oxidation of Toluene

Abstract: A series of manganese oxide catalysts were prepared via a coprecipitation method by adjusting the molar ratio of Mn(NO 3 ) 2 /KMnO 4 and used to catalyze the oxidation of toluene. The MnO x catalyst prepared by the Mn(NO 3 ) 2 /KMnO 4 ratio of 3:7 showed the best catalytic activity, and more than 90% conversion was obtained at 238 °C. The superior catalytic activity of MnO x could be attributed to its slightly higher specific surface area and better pore size distribution. Furthermore, more surface-adsorbed ox… Show more

“…By concluding the available literature, the schematic diagram of possible degradation routes at different temperature sections was described in Figure 8d. According to the literature, [51,52] O ads can be released at low temperatures to form oxygen vacancies and enhance the mobility of lattice oxygen, which was of vital importance to degrade VOCs. What's more, the relationship between O ads , O latt, and catalyst activity proved that when reactive oxygen species reacted with toluene, a high concentration of O ads was benefited to O 2 in the gas phase to quickly supplement oxygen vacancy to accelerate oxygen circulation and enhance the activity [25,53,54] .…”

“…Hence, the surface adsorption oxygen plays a significant role in the catalytic oxidation process of toluene due to its active chemical properties. [ 25,30,70,79 ] The CM‐100 sample should therefore exhibit higher catalytic activity in toluene combustion.…”

“…The adsorbed oxygen species of Mn4Ni1 can be desorbed at 241 °C, which is lower than the other three samples; thus, Mn4Ni1 exhibits stronger oxygen mobility. It is widely accepted that the catalytic oxidation activity of catalyst can be influenced by oxygen mobility …”
