Role of Curcumin in Treatment of Alzheimer Disease

Abstract: A lot of research findings support that curcumin (diferuloyl methane) has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antitumor activity. In India, curcumin has a widespread use as food additive and herbal medicine for human diseases without any side effect. Though curcumin is well established as an anticancer agent but there are a few reports about its promising role against amyloid diseases. According to recent finding curcumin play a crucial inhibitory role in pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Oral admini… Show more

“…It means that protein fibers stay at α‐helical conformation in the presence of nanomicelles following a reaction between fibrils and micelles due to the symmetry of hydrophobic amino acids of fibrils with hydrophobic cores of micelles during the fibrillation . Curcumin has also been as an antioxidant agent and it can nullify free radicals’ effect that is generated during the glycation process and this action causes the inhibition of glycation continuation .…”

“…They were found to inhibit viral replication, affect the morphology of viral cells, and reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Moreover, many countries have used curcumin for its effective antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-mutagenic, anticancer, anti-Alzheimer, and antibacterial activities, and owing to its broad range of activities, curcumin could also be used as an efficient anti-COVID therapeutic [ 160 , 161 , 162 ].…”

“…9,10 Many animal and clinical studies showed that curcumin as the main constituent of turmeric spice is an effective ingredient in reducing Aβ plaques in the brain models of Alzheimer's disease. 11,12 Curcumin is well-known as an anti-inflammation and anti-oxidant ingredient. 13 It is a lipophilic compound that can easily cross the blood-brain barrier and affect Aβ plaque.…”
