Role of Dicumyl Peroxide on Toughening PLLA via Dynamic Vulcanization

Abstract: Our previous work demonstrated that the toughness of PLLA could be improved dramatically by dynamic vulcanizing blends of PLLA/NBR with dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as a cross-link agent. Herein, to reveal the toughening mechanism of DCP on the PLLA/NBR thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs), the distribution of DCP in the PLLA matrix and NBR phase was modulated by changing feeding procedures. The cross-link density of NBR, phase morphology, and mechanical properties of PLLA/NBR−TPVs were investigated thoroughly. It was … Show more

“…The cross-linking of biodegradable polyesters can be performed by reactive processing [15,16,17,18,19] or by irradiation such as β or γ [20,21,22]. Both methods were widely applied to cross-linking of polyesters in the presence of a low concentration of cross-linking agents such as organic peroxides [11,23,24,25,26,27,28,29,30] and multifunctional reagents [21,31,32] or chain extenders [33,34,35,36,37].…”

“…In order to improve the interface interaction between PU and PLA, and obtain a supertoughened PLA/PU blends, the dynamic vulcanization based on PLA/PU blends system are widely reported in the literature. [33][34][35] Polyurethane elastomer prepolymer (PUEP) is a linear or cross-linked intermediate product of PU, which is terminated by reactive isocyanate groups (−NCO). Under appropriate reaction conditions, PUEP can be vulcanized to a rubber phase with a three-dimensional net-like structure.…”

“…Rubber polymer, 35,36 vegetable oil, 37,38 polyurethane elastomer (PUE), 39 and thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) 40−42 are often used to toughen PLA by dynamic vulcanization, and dicumyl peroxide (DCP) is commonly used as a cross-linking agent. 43,44 The products of dynamic vulcanization of PLA and rubber can also be called PLA-based thermoplastic vulcanizates.…”
