Role of femoral artery ultrasound imaging in cardiovascular event risk prediction in a primary prevention cohort at a medium-term follow-up

Abstract: Atherosclerosis is a chronic and progressive disease, which may lead to adverse cardiovascular (CV) events, such as acute aortic syndromes, myocardial infarction, or even sudden cardiac death.Detection of atherosclerosis at the subclinical phase is essential to improve morbidity and mortality, since primary prevention with aggressive risk factor modification can reduce the relative risk of CV events by more than 50% [1]. Non-invasive imaging modalities enable anatomical and functional assessment of subclinical… Show more

“…Femoral IMT is lesser studied as a marker for subclinical arteriosclerosis compared with carotid IMT. To our knowledge, only a single previous study has examined and demonstrated an association between femoral artery IMT and major adverse cardiovascular events in non-CKD patients [29], and no data in patients with CKD exist.…”

“…23 Kocygit et al followed 215 subjects (mean age 54.85 years) for a median of 24 months and found that femoral plaques were independent predictors for CVEs. 24 Giannoukas et al reported that fIMT separately or in combination with cIMT was related to cardiovascular disease. 25 CIMT and AAI are well-established surrogate markers for subclinical atherosclerosis and strong predictors of future CVEs and mortality.…”

“…Early detection and treatment of atherosclerotic disease might be central for improving cardiovascular (CV) prevention [1]. Plaques assessment with vascular imaging is an appealing strategy to aid in CV events' prediction and a potential tool for improving individual CV risk (CVR) stratification, enabling more efficient prevention [1][2][3][4][5]. Atherosclerotic load or burden (i.e., number of plaques and/or territories affected), is associated with (gradual) increase in CVR [3,6,7].…”
