The Low-carbon City Pilot (LCCP) policy is a new environmental governance model to achieve carbon neutrality, promote low-carbon pilot city development, and address climate change. Taking LCCP policy as an exogenous shock, this paper examines the impact of LCCP policy on urban green technology innovation and its transmission mechanism from 2005 to 2017. Based on the Difference-in-Difference (DID) method, the following results are obtained: The LCCP policy can promote urban green technology innovation, and the results remain robust through a series of robustness tests. Mechanism analysis shows that LCCP improves the level of green technology innovation in two ways, it encourages local governments to increase R&D funds and forces pollution-intensive and energy-consuming industries to upgrade industrial structures. In addition, the conclusion also reveals that the urban location characteristics and the intensity of environmental regulation have a heterogeneous impact on green technology innovation, with the most significant effect on the western region. Therefore, policymakers must mobilize the autonomy of local governments, increase the investment of local government R&D funds, and strive to spread the pilot policy of low-carbon cities to the whole country to promote industrial transformation.

PurposeThis paper seeks to provide empirical insight into how industrialization and technology affect environmental quality in Ghana.Design/methodology/approachUsing Ecological Footprint (ECF) as a measure of environmental degradation, the authors employ annual data from World Development Indicators of the World Bank and the Global Footprint Network spanning from 1970 to 2017 and apply the fully modified least squares (FMOLS) technique.FindingsThe results reveal that industrialization has a negative significant influence on ECF, suggesting that industrialization contributes to environmental sustainability in Ghana. The authors find that technology is harmful to the environment as it has a positive significant effect on ECF. The study also documents that while education and financial development improve environmental sustainability, fossil fuel consumption exacerbates environmental degradation in Ghana.Originality/valueThe environmental impact of industrialization is still being debated, with very scanty empirical evidence in the African context. Based on a detailed review of the literature, this paper provides an initial attempt to investigate the industrialization–environmental sustainability nexus in Ghana. Besides, whereas most extant studies have employed CO2 emission as a proxy of environmental degradation, the authors use ECF to gauge the level of environmental degradation which is regarded as a more inclusive metric.

Conventional energy consumption such as coal, natural gas, and oil is a source of deteriorating environmental sustainability as well as a severe challenge to the green environment. The present paper explores the nexus between CO 2 emissions, energy imports, energy intensity, and power generation from renewable and non-renewable energies from 1990 to 2021 in Australia. Based on the ARDL model, the findings reveal that energy imports and power generation from non-renewable energy sources show an adverse effect on the green environment. A 1% increase in conventional energy imports leads to an 11% increase in CO 2 emissions. Similarly, a 1% increase in energy generation from conventional sources will increase CO 2 emissions by 45%. On the other hand, lower energy intensity and power generation from renewable sources reveal a positive effect on environmental quality. A 1% increase in energy intensity will decrease CO 2 emissions by 92% while energy generation from non-conventional sources by 15%. Most interestingly, energy intensity reveals the foremost position among all the selected variables to decarbonize and effectively transform conventional energy to clean and green energy production and utilization. The robustness test outcomes confirm the results of the empirical output. Furthermore, this study suggests that governments and policymakers should focus on the adaptation of lower energy intensity for the purpose to reduce CO 2 emissions and promote a clean and green environment. Finally, power generation from renewable energy sources plays an inevitable role which ultimately helps environmentally sustainability in Australia.
