“…Furthermore, it is suggested that some fungal species can adapt to metal toxicity due to prolonged exposure to toxic metals (Khan et al 2017). Among the most abundant genera found in the OIZ shoot mycobiota, previous studies have reported that Aureobasidium (Cu, Pb, Cd), Gibberella (Cu, Zn), Alternaria (Se, Cr, Cu, Cd, Ni, Pb, Zn), Cladosporium (Pb, Zn, Cu, Mn, Cd), and Hormonema (Cu, Ni) are microfungi that exhibit resistance to some heavy metals (Helander 1995;Kumar and Dwivedi 2021;Refaey et al 2021;Zhang et al 2022).…”

“…In the field of OIZ, despite the high levels of heavy metal pollution, the concentrations of Ni and V elements in P. brutia shoots were below the threshold values, contrary to expectations. However, among the dominant species in the shoot mycobiota of the region, fungi belonging to the Alternaria genus are known to be tolerant to Ni and have adapted to living in environments with high metal accumulations (Lindblom et al 2018;Refaey et al 2021). To the best of the author's knowledge, there is no study reporting any fungal genera identified in the OIZ being involved in V detoxification.…”

“…Over 80,000 fungal species isolated from soil have been described and reported (Bridge and Spooner, 2001). Fungus found on soils are involved in different roles including degradation of heavy toxic metals (Refaey et al, 2021). Fungal diversity can be identified by observation of fruiting bodies in the soil environment or soil isolation from cultures (Frac et al, 2018).…”

“…The soil microbiota is an important component of terrestrial ecosystems because it influences the services and overall functioning of the soil [1]. Numerous fungal genera are able to survive in heavy-metalcontaminated environments, and even to reduce their concentration or to metabolize them to less toxic forms, through various resistance mechanisms [2]. For this reason, biological soil remediation methods are taken into consideration for their low costs, low negative impact on the environment as well as their role in ecological restoration [3].…”
