Role of geraniol against lead acetate-mediated hepatic damage and their interaction with liver carboxylesterase activity in rats

Abstract: In this study, the effect of geraniol (50 mg/kg for 30 d), a natural antioxidant and repellent/antifeedant monoterpene, in a rat model of lead acetate-induced (500 ppm for 30 d) liver damage was evaluated. Hepatic malondialdehyde increased in the lead acetate group. Reduced glutathione unchanged, but glutathione S-transferase, glutathione reductase, as well as carboxylesterase activities decreased in geraniol, lead acetate and geraniol + lead acetate groups. 8-OhDG immunoreactivity, mononuclear cell infiltrati… Show more

“…Moreover, geraniol only slightly affected CYP enzyme activities. These results, in agreement with the findings of other studies ( Ozkaya et al, 2017 ), demonstrate that treatment with geraniol can be considered safe even at high doses and for long periods of time.…”

“…In our previous study, we had found that Ces and GST enzyme activities decreased in liver of rats given lead acetate. 53 In this study, although we saw the ameliorative effect of 3-benzoyl-7-hydroxy coumarin in GST enzyme activity, we also found that this had no ameliorative effect on Ces enzyme activity in the combination group. It may be considered that the ineffectiveness of coumarin on Ces activity depends on the dose applied.…”

“…The levels of Pb determined by ICPMS in rats [25] were shown in Table 3 The concentrations of 8-OHdG determined by LCMSMS were presented in Table 4. The recovery value was calculated over seven samples and was found in the range of 90% -105 %.…”

“…At the end of 30 days, the animals were sacrificed and the liver tissues were removed and stored at -20 for biochemical analysis. The amount of Pb in liver was determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS, Perkin Elmer, MA, USA) in Adıyaman University Central Research Laboratory by Ozkaya et al [25].…”
