Role of hepatitis B virus infection in pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy

Abstract: There is a relationship between HBV infection and IgAN. In addition to the humoral immune damage mediated by HBAg-HBAb immune complex, the cellular mechanism mediated by HBV originating from renal cells in situ may be also involved in the pathogenesis of IgAN.

“…Only 10% of patients were recorded as receiving non-antiretroviral concomitant medication in our database, which may be an underestimate. Both HBV and HCV infections have been associated with renal disease and chronic renal failure [27,28]. Within our cohort, seroprevalence of HBV and HCV is low.…”

“…3 The association of membranous nephropathy (MN) with HBs antigenemia has been well established in endemic regions, 4 although the etiological role of hepatitis B virus (HBV) antigenemia and HBV antigen deposition in IgAN remains speculative. 5,6 Researchers who suggest a strong association between IgAN and HBs antigenemia indicate that mesangial and subendothelial trapping of circulating immune complexes and subendothelial deposits results in the onset of IgA nephropathy with hepatitis B surface antigen (HBs-IgAN). [7][8][9] In case of HBV-associated membranous nephropathy (HBV-MN), unlike the prognosis in affected children, that in adults is not favorable.…”

“…In addition, hepatitis B virus may contribute to the pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy; in a previous study, hepatitis B surface antigenemia was noted in 18 of 100 patients who had IgA nephropathy, and hepatitis B virus antigens were identified in kidney tissue in 31% patients who had IgA nephropathy. 16 In the present study, the 4 patients who had IgA nephropathy also had hepatitis B virus-related cirrhosis (patients 6, 8, 9, and 10) ( Tables 2 and 3).…”
