Role of Human Knowledge and Communication on Operational Benefits Gained from Six Sigma

Abstract: Six Sigma (SS) is a production philosophy focused on human experiences and knowledge, aimed to minimize defects of products and services. The appropriate implementation of SS requires an education process, reliable data analysis, efficient didactic material, statistical techniques and human knowledge to improve communication and operational benefits. In this article, we present a structural equation model integrating those aspects as latent variables and relating them with ten hypotheses. Data for hypothesis v… Show more

“…As proved with published knowledge [10,17,[100][101][102][103][104], employees of railway undertakings may contribute to the risk reduction on one hand and they may represent a risk factor themselves on the other hand. Respecting the ideas of García-Alcaraz, the appropriate implementation of Lean principles requires an education process and human knowledge [105]. The underestimation of risk factors and subsequently risks which result from an inappropriate approach of employees may negatively impact the quality of business culture.…”

“…In this sense, Caro Soto [73] highlighted that Mexican companies are currently developing a digital environment incorporating ICT in SC operations, managing information to generate competitiveness and productivity within the organization. With this, SC partners are motivated and confident since the information is reliable and timely to implement the Planning activities and the Execution and Control of operations, thereby reducing uncertainty, as indicated by García-Alcaraz et al [74]. With all of this, procurement, production, distribution, and demand can be coordinated by Planning requirements and capacities simultaneously with ICT implementation [68].…”

“…The findings allow us to conclude that ICT integration is crucial in the company's activities, as indicated by the company's CEOs, who mention that, especially in the SS, technologies help to Control through the wireless information transfer to track goods in real-time. García-Alcaraz et al [74] also indicates that, by accelerating the transfer of information by integrating ICTs in the operations of the different stages of Planning, Execution, and Control applied within the SC processes, the Benefits associated with increased efficiency, quality, and accuracy of information are expected, where better decision-making is finally expected.…”

“…Their implementation without adaptation to the environment may be another factor of failure. Garcia-Alcaraz et al (2017), for example, conducted an analysis to combine human factors with operational benefits. Based on the assumption that Six Sigma is a philosophy related to human resources and that it depends on management decisions, supporting organisational structure, and implementation strategy, we can state that the implementation of the Six Sigma concept is strongly influenced by the level of soft skills of human resources.…”
