Role of individual-housing–based socioeconomic status measure in relation to smoking status among late adolescents with asthma

Abstract: Purpose We aimed to assess whether smoking status among individuals in late adolescence (19-22 years) with asthma was associated with socioeconomic status (SES) defined by HOUSES, an individual housing based SES measure. Methods A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted among the 1988-1989 Olmsted County, Minnesota Birth Cohort, with physician-diagnosed asthma and that lived in the community during the study period (November 1, 2008-October 31, 2012). Using a z-score for housing value, actual sq… Show more

“…The data collected in this study included sport factors, educational factors (predictors), and smoking behaviors (outcome). Additionally, since previous studies have identified strong associations between gender, age, socioeconomic status, and parental conflict and smoking behavior in adolescents, these covariates were also investigated [ 9 , 25 , 38 , 39 , 40 ]. A structured questionnaire that had been previously used and validated in cross sectional investigations completed in similar populations was used [ 25 , 41 ].…”

“…A high HOUSES score correlates with high SES. Previous research has been used to document the successful application of HOUSES as an effective SES measure in clinical research, [55][56][57][58][59][60][61][62] and HOUSES was recently found to be a useful surrogate for SES to assess risk stratification and hospitalization in adults with multiple chronic conditions. 63 Children with missing address information were excluded from the HOUSES analyses.…”

“…13,58 While home value to approximate socioeconomic status has been used in other studies, this study represents the first time it has been applied in breast cancer outcomes research. 13,59,60 Other studies have gathered SES based on patient surveys or more broad area-level data from population census collections. 13,61,62 A limitation of using home value is that it does not account for renters.…”
