Role of Large-Scale Circulation in Triggering Foehns in the Hokuriku District of Japan during Midsummer

Abstract: The relationships between large-scale circulation and foehns observed during midsummer in Hokuriku district, located on the Japan Sea side of central Japan, are examined using Japanese long-term reanalysis project data, with additional data from the Japan Meteorological Agency climate data assimilation system. All foehn events are classified into two types: a tropical cyclone (TC)-induced foehn and an extratropical cyclone (EC)-induced foehn. The occurrence of the TC type is attributed to a combination of a ty… Show more

“…From the typhoon tracks, typhoons are observed to move westward or northwestward along the southern periphery of the anomalous high from day À2 to day 0. Thus, it appears that the locally enhanced high to the northeast of the typhoons can, in turn, play a significant role in inhibiting typhoons' northward migration and in facilitating their further westward movement at their developing stage, which is consistent with the results of Shibata et al [2010]. Figure 3 is the same as Figure 2 but for category OC.…”

“…One factor that makes the environment favorable for the appearance of extremely high temperatures is the foehn phenomenon (e.g., Ogura et al 2004;Shibata et al 2010). Physical parameters that control the occurrence of the foehn events have been investigated.…”
