Role of mesenchymal stem cell derived extracellular vesicles in autoimmunity: A systematic review

Abstract: BACKGROUND Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been reported to possess immune regulatory effects in innate and adaptive immune reactions. MSCs can mediate intercellular communications by releasing extracellular vesicles (EVs), which deliver functional molecules to targeted cells. MSC derived EVs (MSC-EVs) confer altering effects on many immune cells, including T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, natural killer cells, dendritic cells, and macrophages. A large number of studies have suggested that MSC-EVs… Show more

“…Considering the safety of MSC transplantation, many investigators have focused on EVs derived from MSCs. Compared with MSCs, EVs derived from MSCs exhibited similar immunosuppressive functions in several studies in vitro as cell-free therapy and showed high safety ( 66 , 67 ). However, there is currently no standard and high-efficiency extraction method for EVs, which leads to low production yields and increased heterogeneity of MSC EVs ( 68 ).…”

“…The "secretome" of MSCs, including secretory proteins such as growth factors, cytokines, and chemokines and EVs such as microvesicles (MVs; 100-1000 nm diameter) and exosomes (40-150 nm diameter), has been shown to Cord blood Hindlimb ischemia model In vitro/ in vivo (mice) Improved engraftment; increased the number of microvessels and smooth muscle α-actin-positive vessels [172] exhibit many of the therapeutic properties of MSCs. For example, MSC-derived EVs have demonstrated similar or even superior therapeutic capacity for autoimmune diseases and neurodegenerative disorders compared with their parental MSCs [176,177]. They also have better safety profiles due to their better immunocompatibility.…”

“…This difference is relevant also because proteins and microRNAs (miRNAs) of such cargos induce different therapeutic effects. In addition, they operate as biomarkers, relevant for the diagnosis and the treatment of autoimmunity-related diseases [ 16 , 17 ].…”
