Role of Multifocal Electroretinography in the Diagnosis of Idiopathic Macular Hole

Abstract: The analysis of ERG in the fellow eyes of patients with macular hole seems clinically useful. The lower amplitude may forecast the propensity for subsequent development of a macular hole. Patients with low central ERG amplitude and lower ring ratios in the healthy fellow eyes should have stricter follow-up.

“…13,20,21 This analysis results in a discriminant function, to which the value of a given parameter is applied, which in turn then determines the group to which a given case belongs on the basis of a positive or negative calculation. In this study, if the result was positive, then the patient was considered highly likely to exhibit morphologic deterioration in the future.…”

“…[3][4][5][6][7] Multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) is also useful for the detection of functional changes in macular diseases. [12][13][14][15] However, only one report has investigated SD-OCT and mfERG in patients with LMHs. 15 The aims of this study were to investigate the morphologic evolution of LMHs as determined by SD-OCT, and to evaluate retinal function by mfERG and assess its usefulness for predicting the likelihood of morphologic deterioration in LMHs.…”

“…Ring ratios were defined as the ratios of the central ring's electric response to the electric response of each of the peripheral rings [11]. Very few studies have used this index in the analysis of mfERG results even though analysis of the ring ratios on mfERG has several benefits [11,19,20]. The amplitude, the response density of each ring generally used in the analysis, decreases with age, while the ring ratios are generally constant and are not significantly influenced by age [11,21].…”
