Role of omega-3 fatty acids in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular Diseases: A consensus statement from the Experts’ Committee Of National Society Of Cardiometabolic Medicine

Abstract: Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) has been considered as the primary target for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). However, there are still residual cardiovascular risks in some patients even if LDL-C achieves the target level. Emerging evidence suggestes that elevated triglyceride (TG) level or triglyceride-rich lipoprotein (TRL) cholesterol (TRL-C) is one of the important components of the residual cardiovascular risks. Omega-3 fatty acids have been show… Show more

“…Fish oil, with a selected composition (e.g. ω-3 ω-6), has been used for more than a decade to counteract lipid deposits, with specific reference to LDL (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol or to HDL (high density lipoprotein) on LDL cholesterol ratio (HDL/LDL), thus to prevent cardiovascular diseases ( 51 , 52 ). Here these components, added to the vitamins and selenomethionine, may further support the whole lipid metabolism to diminish the well-known inflammatory detrimental status strictly linked to the fat deposit in overweight subjects.…”

“…Moreover, a statistically significant decrease in low-grade inflammation biomarkers levels, such as Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) or Interleukin-6 (IL-6), was also observed [48]. However, recent studies suggest that the proper validation of dosage and composition of DHA and EPA are needed to assess more deeply the role of n-3 PUFAs in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk reduction, due to the inconsistent results of large randomized clinical trials [49,50].…”

“…3 . Fish consumption helps to prevent heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases due to its omega-3 fatty acids [ 15 ]. Consuming fish twice a week can lower the risk of heart disease and stroke due to its high content of omega-3 fatty acids [ 16 ].…”
