Role of post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) in the assessment of the challenging diagnosis of pericardial tamponade as cause of death in cases with hemopericardium

Abstract: PMCT is able to provide some findings indicative of PT. Based on this evidence, in other instances HP could be judged circumstantial rather than fatal. This study suggests the possibility to use PMCT findings to retrospectively demonstrate a clinical condition, such as PT.

“…The clinical history may be also prove valuable in this exercise. 16 Although their study is limited to a small number of cases, Filograna et al 16 suggest that the use of PMCT is superior to the clinical diagnosis of pericardial tamponade secondary to haemopericardium and when combined with the clinical history it reaches a high degree of accuracy.…”

“…According to Watanabe et al, hemopericardium can appear either as double band ("armored heart" or "target sign"), single band or with a horizontal level [14]. Filograna et al described the conditions that should be fulfilled in cases of hemopericardium for diagnosing a fatal cardiac tamponade [15]. Although trauma and its results are easily recognized on PMCT, it is unknown whether the various atraumatic causes of the hemopericardium can be differentiated on unenhanced PMCT.…”
