Role of Proline and Potassium in Adaptation to Salinity in Different Types of Halophytes

Abstract: This review considers the specific mechanisms of salinity adaptation in different salt-tolerant plant species. The differences among salt tolerance mechanisms are primarily associated with the organization of long-distance ion transport, including limitation of Na + and Cl À inflow to aboveground organs, their accumulation in vacuoles, or their excretion back to the environment (by salt glands on the leaf surface), maintaining a high K + /Na + ratio in the cytoplasm and additional synthesis of organic osmolyte… Show more

“…For example, the accumulation of proline protects and stabilizes ROS-scavenging enzymes, activates alternative detoxification pathways, and enhances the activity of methylglyoxal detoxification enzymes, peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase. It also increases the glutathione redox state under salt stress (Shuyskaya et al 2020). Interestingly, they accomplish these protective functions without negatively impacting cellular metabolism while safeguarding the integrity of the cell membrane (Slama et al 2015).…”

“…It is known that P5CS1 (stress-specific isoform of proline) is localized in the cytosol and chloroplast (Szabados and Savoure, 2010;Kaur and Asthir, 2015). In chloroplasts, NADPH for P5CS1 synthesis comes from the photosynthetic electron transport chain (Liang et al, 2013;Shuyskaya et al, 2020b).…”
