“…This finding was in contrast with the results obtained by most of the studies. Previous studies have shown a positive relationship between religious orientation and marital satisfaction (Dudley & Kosinski, 1990;Olson et al, 2015;Rasouli & Soltani, 2012;Yeganeh & Shaikhmahmoodi, 2013).…”

“…The couples claimed that they always remembered God, saw their illness as a divine test, and that their illness could be a blessing since they experienced good events in the post-illness period of their lives. 59 The benefits of religiousness and spirituality can enable an individual to cope with illness more easily and achieve internal peace, optimism, positive relations, social and emotional support, life satisfaction, and eventually the power to adapt to life with a spouse who has MS. 60,61 The Iranian culture attaches great importance to religion and spirituality and people tend to seek help and protection from God in times of crisis. People's spirituality helps them cope with the difficulties of life; in other words, spiritual well-being facilitates adjustment.…”

“…Studies in Western contexts have suggested that religion and religious practices are associated with higher levels of marital satisfaction, marital adjustment, marital stability, and lower rates of divorce (e.g., Mahoney et al, 1999;Weaver et al, 2002). The benefits of religious practice may lie in its contribution to prevent and resolve marital conflict through providing a shared religious belief system (Lu, Marks, & Apavaloiae, 2012), and there is consistent evidence suggesting that this may also be the case in Muslim contexts (Ahmadi, Azad-Marzabadi, & Nabipoor Ashrafi, 2008;Hünler & Gençöz, 2005;Ilyas, 1991;Yeganeh & Shaikhmahmoodi, 2013). Ilyas (1991) reported that reports of engagement in religious practices were positively related to marital adjustment among Bangladeshi Muslim couples, although the variance explained in husbands' and wives' marital adjustment was rather modest.…”
