Role of seed priming in improving seed germination and seedling growth of maize (Zea mays L.) under rain fed condition

Abstract: Seed priming enhances early seed emergence and proper crop stand establishment which enables the crop to capture more soil moisture, nutrients, and solar radiation. An on-farm experiment was conducted in Okhaldhunga, Nepal to study the effect of six different priming treatments (50 millimoles common salt solution, 200 millimoles urea solution, 1 percent MOP solution, 2.5 times diluted urine, water, and control) on germination and growth of two maize varieties, Manakamana-3 and Nutan-IL60. The experiment was se… Show more

“…Application of B seed priming @ 0.01% significantly (p≤0.05) improved the growth and yield-related characteristics of tested mungbean cultivars. Significant augmentation in seed germination, growth and grain yield, B contents and grain quality [ 7 ] could be attributed to appropriate B concentration, which played important role in cell elongation, photosynthesis, transpiration and other biochemical reactions [ 35 ]. Moreover, decrease in above characteristics under higher B doses, i.e., 0.05%, 0.1% and 1% was lack of enzymatic reactions controlling cell multiplication [ 36 ].…”

“…(2008) observed higher levels of amylase activity, ascorbate and phenolic contents in nutrient primed seeds whilst Chen and Arora (2011) conclude that seed priming endo-β-mannase activity, which weakens the endosperm and hence promotes germination. Moreover, NSP increases the germination by increasing the activity of enzymatic antioxidants, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) which helps in utilization of protein and carbohydrate during germination process Kiran et al., (2012) ; Shrestha et al. (2019) .…”

“…These techniques are not only used for aforementioned stored seeds, but also newly harvested seeds. The advantages of seed priming have been revealed in both optimal and unfavourable conditions (jisha et al 2013) for many oil seed crops such as corn, soybean and sunflower (Shrestha et al, 2019;Langeroodi and Noora, 2017;Bourioug et al, 2020).…”
