Role of Sn as a Process Control Agent on Mechanical Alloying Behavior of Nanocrystalline Titanium Based Powders

Abstract: In this study, the effects of Sn as a process control agent (PCA) on the final powder sizes, morphology, homogenization and alloying process of a new titanium alloy were investigated. Two kinds of powders, Ti10Ta8Mo and Ti10Ta8Mo3Sn (wt %), were prepared using a mechanical alloying process. For the Ti10Ta8Mo3Sn (wt %) alloy, the Sn element was used as PCA to enhance the milling process in the planetary ball mill. The milling process of both compositions was carried out with 200 rpm for 10, 15, 20, 40, 60, 80 a… Show more

“…After ultra-centrifugal milling, a further milling stage in a ball mill was necessary to reduce the micrometric powders to nanometer scale. A ball mill is a simple and costeffective way of producing homogeneous and ultrafine powders, mostly ceramic and metallic powders [49,50]. The powders were ball milled in a zirconia (ZrO 2 ) jar (0.3 L), using zirconia balls in an ambient atmosphere; the mechanical milling was performed in a ball mill, model S/1 1000B (Ceramic Instruments S.r.l, Sassuolo Modena, Italy), operating at 390 rpm.…”

“…Moreover, all the above-mentioned biocompatible elements can be classified as β-phase stabilizing elements in Ti-based alloys [ 27 ]. Molybdenum could be used in Ti-based alloys designed for biomedical applications, such as TiNbMoSn and TiTaMo obtained by powder metallurgy technique [ 28 , 29 , 30 ]. Additionally, biocompatible properties of pure Hf have also been investigated.…”

“…This milling method uses no media in the milling treatment of materials. Milling media such as ethanol and other organic solvent are widely used as PCA in the milling method [ 28 , 29 , 30 ]. PCA functions to avoid cold welding and bonding between the powder particles.…”
