Role of SO3 in Elemental Mercury Removal by Magnetic Biochar

Abstract: Magnetic biochar (MBC) has been proven to be an efficient sorbent for elemental mercury (Hg0) removal from coal-fired flue gas in our previous studies. However, SO3 is an acidic component of flue gas, and its role in Hg0 removal by MBC has not been determined. In this work, the Hg0 removal behaviors and the mechanisms involved were investigated in the presence of SO3. The results showed that SO3 notably impeded the Hg0 adsorption process, whereas the oxidation efficiency of Hg0 increased as the SO3 concentrati… Show more

“…Figure a represents the Fe 2p spectra; three peaks were raised over fresh TUF 0.46 at 710.5, 711.4, and 713.8 eV that were assigned to Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ in octahedral coordination [Fe 3+ (O)], and Fe 3+ in tetrahedral coordination [Fe 3+ (t)] of Fe 3 O 4 , respectively . After the Hg 0 removal experiment, a prominent change in Fe 3+ (t) coordination was observed over the spent TUF 0.46 .…”

“…The content of the three components is relatively low compared with the abovementioned O 2 , SO 2 , and NO, but it might also have certain impacts on the removal of Hg 0 . Many researchers considered that SO 3 , NO 2 , and HCl could enhance the Hg 0 removal, and this will be examined in future work.…”

“…A biochar with a high capacity to adsorb N 2 O (0.057–0.30 mg N 2 O/g char) was obtained by Xiao et al Mercury and its compounds are considered toxic and harmful to humans and animals . Mercury emissions are mainly generated from the tail flue gas of coal-fired power plants. , Biochar loaded with metal oxide composites exhibited high performance for Hg 0 removal. Qin et al studied the use of iron-based modified biochar for adsorption of Hg 0 , and the reaction path of Hg 0 adsorption on the surface of iron-based modified biochar was assessed. Different adsorption sites were generated during the synthesis of modified biochar, which include iron-based doping sites and oxygen-containing functional group adsorption sites.…”
