Role of spinning top urethra in dysfunctional voiding

Abstract: STU was related to recurrent UTIs, VUR, poor bladder compliance and more serious functional urinary obstruction. Furthermore, STU may be a consequence of a neurogenic maturation defect in detrusor-sphincter coordination resembling that of urofacial syndrome, because development of this situation was found to be independent of the duration of symptoms.

“…It is suggested that the minimum threshold for normal bladder compliance is 20 mL/cmH 2 O 31 . Several studies considered a compliance lower than 10 mL/cm H 2 O as low bladder compliance 32,33 . In this study, we determined that 39.3% of the patients had renal scarring.…”

“…Eighty-four children with STU were compared to 70 children with dysfunctional voiding and normal urethral width in a retrospective study on neurologically intact children with dysfunctional voiding. STU was more common in females and related to recurrent UTIs, VUR, poor bladder compliance, and an increase in voiding pressure [ 3 ].…”

“…[45] Kutlu et al ., found a spinning top urethra in 55% of children with DV evaluated by voiding cystourethrogram. [46] These children had significantly higher voiding pressures and were more prone to recurrent urinary infections and reflux. MCUG is recommended in all patients with symptomatic voiding difficulty.…”
