Role of stem cell derivatives in inflammatory diseases

Abstract: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are pluripotent stem cells of mesodermal origin with the ability of self-renewal and multidirectional differentiation, which have all the common characteristics of stem cells and the ability to differentiate into adipocytes, osteoblasts, neuron-like cells and other cells. Stem cell derivatives are extracellular vesicles(EVs) released from mesenchymal stem cells that are involved in the process of body’s immune response, antigen presentation, cell differentiation, and anti-inflamma… Show more

“…Exosomes are heterogeneous nanosomes that mediate intercellular communication. [ 36 ] As an important biological carrier, exosomes have been proved to contain a variety of substances including circRNA. [ 37,38 ] Given the importance of circRNA in the progression of cancer, the detection of exosomal RNA in patient body fluids is of great value for the diagnosis and prognosis of cancer.…”

“…The cargo of these exosomes contain proteins with various anti-colitis properties, especially metallothionein-2 [ 133 , 134 ]. Further relevant cargo include various miRNAs, which play a crucial role in immune system coordination through regulating T cells and NF-κB pathways; these miRNAs include miR-146a and miR-155 [ 135 ]. Furthermore, it has also been demonstrated that exosome treatment in IBD can normalize the intestinal microbiome, especially via IPSC-derived exosomes [ 136 ].…”

“…This approach is gaining increasing attention due to its benefits, notably excellent safety, ease of administration, and scalability. In contrast to traditional cell‐based therapies that require the transplantation of live cells, which can be challenging to obtain and preserve, cell‐free therapeutics can be produced in large quantities and stored for extended periods, making them more accessible for clinical use 2 . Furthermore, cell‐free therapies may pose a low risk of immune rejection provided that they do not contain live cells that could trigger an immune response.…”
