Role of stochasticity in turbulence and convective intermittent transport at the scrape off layer of Ohmic plasma in QUEST

Abstract: Statistical features of fluctuations are investigated using the fast camera imaging technique in the scrape of layer (SOL) of electron cyclotron resonance heated Ohmic plasma. Fluctuations in the SOL towards low field side are dominated by coherent convective structures (blobs). Two dimensional structures of the higher order moments (skewness s and kurtosis k) representing the shape of probability density function (PDF) are studied. s and k are seen to be functions of the magnetic field lines. s and k are cons… Show more

“…The experiments were conducted on QUEST [11][12][13][14][15], which is a medium-sized spherical tokamak (R = 0. height and diameter of the vacuum vessel (VV) is 2.8 m. Four pairs of poloidal field coils and three separated center solenoid coils are available and their combination produces various magnetic configurations [11]. Of late, the maximum pulse duration is reaching nearly 10 min.…”

“…These are 3D filaments, whose poloidal footprints are often referred to as 'blobs' in 2D. They are observed as large intermittent bursts of density towards the SOL [6,7]. An emerging trend in either mitigating or suppressing the convective bursts (blobs and ELMs) and their effects on the PFCs in the leading tokamaks worldwide, are the resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs).…”
