Role of the Inflammasome, IL-1β, and IL-18 in Bacterial Infections

Abstract: The inflammasome is an important innate immune pathway that regulates at least two host responses protective against infections: (1) secretion of the proinflammatory cytokines IL-1β and IL-18 and (2) induction of pyroptosis, a form of cell death. Inflammasomes, of which different types have been identified, are multiprotein complexes containing pattern recognition receptors belonging to the Nod-like receptor family or the PYHIN family and the protease caspase-1. The molecular aspects involved in the activation… Show more

“…Caspase 1 activation can also result in the activation of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-1␤ (17). These mature cytokines are then released from the cell and have varied effects, such as leukocyte recruitment, promotion of T and B cell activation, and upregulation of other inflammatory cytokines (18).…”

“…L'interleukine-1b L'IL-1 est une cytokine majeure de la réponse inflammatoire, connue auparavant sous la dénomi-nation de pyrogène endogène [30,31]. Elle exerce de nombreuses fonctions comme l'induction de la fièvre au niveau cérébral ou la stimulation de la moelle osseuse à l'origine d'hyperleucocytose et de thrombocytose.…”

“…NLRP3 and ASC mediate H. ducreyi-induced inflammasome activation. Bacterial pathogens induce the assembly of several types of inflammasomes (22,34,(42)(43)(44). The NLRP3 inflammasome is the most versatile type, sensing diverse microbial components as well as danger signals associated with tissue damage, and plays a crucial role in response to different bacterial infections (45).…”
