Role of the inter‐ply microstructure in the consolidation quality of high‐performance thermoplastic composites

In this article, the numerical and experimental results for buckling analysis of a nanocomposite beams reinforced by nanorods are studied and compared. The Chebyshev–Ritz method is used to calculate the buckling numerically and compare it with the buckling test. Epoxy resin, glass's fiber, and nanorods are used to make composites. These nanorods are made using recycled materials. Also, bending and tensile tests are used to obtain the properties of these composites. In addition, the effect of various parameters such as Young's modulus, temperature change, Poisson's ratio, and boundary conditions, the strain gradient parameter, and different shape function is investigated. The addition of nanorods increases the strength and stiffness of composites and increases the critical buckling load. Actually, the made nanorods are used as a reinforcement in matrix, thus in the made nanocomposites, fracture and buckling tests are done and the results indicate that the inclusion of nanorods (0.32%) increases the critical buckling load by 16.4%. A facile hydrothermal method to synthesis the nano rodes has a less cost with the other methods, thus by adding a small percentage of it to the composite, the stiffness of the structure increases. According to the results and the significant increase in Young's modulus and critical buckling load and the cost‐effectiveness of carbon nanorods (CNRs) made from recycled materials, these environmentally friendly reinforcements can be used in various industries such as machine body construction, automobile manufacturing, shipbuilding and construction of type's turbines.Highlights Using potato peels and hydrothermal methods, CNRs produced. These CNRs are useful, and production is cheap and no harm environmental. Buckling sample include of glass fiber, without and with CNRs and epoxy resin. Anomalous hydraulic fluid absorption by carbon fiber/PEKK composites: Physical and mechanical aspects

Carbon fiber (CF)/polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) composites are exposed to Skydrol, a hydraulic fluid made of phosphate esters widely used in the aviation field. The present study investigates Skydrol absorption of CF/PEKK composite layups and the associated PEKK matrix. A significant unexpected increase of Skydrol uptake is observed for cross‐ply composites (0.50%) compared to unidirectional ones (0.06%), independently of ply number. The use of ‘model’ fluids like water and ethanol allows to identify the origin of this anomalous Skydrol absorption in the case of cross‐ply layup. We propose that the latter involves an imbibition process governed by the fluid surface tension and the presence of submicronic cavities. SEM imaging of composite cross‐section after ion beam polishing confirms fiber‐matrix submicronic debonding in the interlaminar region in the cross‐ply composite. SEM–EDX confirms the presence of Skydrol into the submicronic cavities. Despite this anomalous absorption, off‐axis tensile testing as well as ILSS testing show no significant impact of Skydrol on CF/PEKK mechanical properties with less than 10% difference compared to the initial values.Highlights Absorption by diffusion of Skydrol in neat PEKK and CF/PEKK composites Link between fluid surface tension and anomalous Skydrol absorption Evidence of submicronic cavities in CF/PEKK composites by means of SEM–EDX Low impact of Skydrol on CF/PEKK mechanical properties

Morphological, thermal and mechanical properties of wheat‐straw reinforced copper nanocomposite

The work summarizes an innovative nanocomposite including synthesized copper nanoparticle (CuNP) impregnated wheat straw (WS) (the agronomic waste from an wheat plant) reinforced unsaturated polyester resin has been established. The addition of nanoparticles (NPs) increased the antifungal properties (~11%), durability (~9%), and strength (~39%) of the composites. Therefore, these nanoparticles have been synthesized from a copper chloride dihydrate precursor and they have been impregnated into wheat straw via cationization. This copper‐impregnated wheat straw (CuIWS) was formulated and employed to create a strong and long‐lasting nanocomposite with unsaturated polyester resin. Their morphological, mechanical, chemical, biodegradability (BD), and thermal properties were estimated and relationships were explicated systematically. Particularly, the tensile strength of polyester resin, crude and treated WS (cationized and copper‐impregnated) composites were 11.70, 14.20, 20.92, and 22.34 N/mm2 respectively. Therefore the reinforcement capability for crude, cationized and copper‐impregnated WS composites increased by ~22%, 75%, and 92% respectively. The residual ash was just about 16.23%, 12.04% and 6.56% for copper impregnated wheat straw composite (CuIWSC), Cationized wheat straw composite (CWSC) and untreated wheat straw composite (UTWSC) respectively point to the existence of ~4.1% Cu incorporated into the wheat straw which holds up the energy dispersive x‐ray (EDX) spectra of ~4.2% copper content. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicates that the nanocomposites are stable up to 325°C. These nanocomposites also show superlative crystallinity compared to other ones. Water uptake capacity followed typical Fickian diffusion law. The developed nanocomposites might be suitable for automobile and aircraft parts, furniture, and other indoor to outdoor applications.Highlights TS of the composites increased by increasing the WS filling up to 15%. The crystallinity increased after the addition of nanoparticles. The typical water uptake properties followed the Fickian diffusion rule. Incorporation of nanoparticles increased 11% antifungal properties. The developed nanocomposites are used for inside and outside applications.
