Role of the pygmy resonance in the synthesis of heavy elements with radioactive beams

Abstract: It is suggested that the inclusion of the virtual excitation of the soft giant dipole (pygmy) resonance in the calculation of the cross section for very neutron-rich radioactive beam-induced fusion reactions may enhance the formation probability of the heavy compound nucleus produced at low excitation energy.

“…This effect is expected to enhance the fusion cross section. 22), 23) The fusion reaction of the halo nuclei has been discussed as an extreme case of the neutron rich nuclei. We made an analysis based on the three-body model.…”

“…Concerning effects of the neutron halo on the nuclear reactions, a theoretical study has been performed with various models and has put rather different predictions on the fusion cross section [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8], while the experimental study has become feasible only recently [9][10][11]. Thus, the effect of the neutron halo has not yet been clarified.…”

His contributions were numerous, ranging from pioneering publications in the early developments of physics with rare isotopes [1][2][3][4], extensive reviews [5,6], and the first textbook exclusively dedicated to the subject [7]. Mahir was a driving force in the field, and we are happy to have collaborated with him and to have profited from his ideas and hard work.…”
