Role of Ultrasound in the Assessment of Chronic Venous Insufficiency

Abstract: Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is responsible for significant morbidity and health expenditure. Doppler ultrasound techniques provide a noninvasive method for identifying structural and functional abnormalities associated with CVI; this information then allows treatment options to be considered. Ultrasound allows clear identification of specific venous segments and provides information on the patency of these segments, the presence or absence of reflux, perforator veins, collateral channels, or patterns of… Show more

“…2 Venous duplex ultrasound (DUS) has become the mainstay of lower leg venous assessment in patients with CVU and allows the clinician to determine the site and extent of reflux. 3 Superficial venous surgery treats underlying venous reflux in legs with superficial venous incompetence and may improve venous hypertension. In 2004, the ESCHAR trial showed that abolition of superficial venous reflux through superficial venous surgery, combined with compression therapy significantly reduced ulcer recurrence at one year compared with compression alone.…”

“…Healthcare professionals can assess venous insufficiency and detect potential abnormalities using venous Doppler ultrasound imaging modality. 6 It provides accurate anatomical details and allows for visualizing blood flow dynamics. However, ultrasound has certain limitations, such as operator dependency and a requirement for direct contact with the skin.…”

“…While ultrasound has traditionally been the gold standard for diagnosing CVI in lower extremity, IRT is emerging as a promising alternative. Healthcare professionals can assess venous insufficiency and detect potential abnormalities using venous Doppler ultrasound imaging modality 6 . It provides accurate anatomical details and allows for visualizing blood flow dynamics.…”
