Role of Vegetation as a Mitigating Factor in the Urban Context

Abstract: It is known that the urban environment amplifies the effects of climate change, sometimes with disastrous consequences that put people at risk. These aspects can be affected by urban vegetation and planting design but, while there are thousands of papers related to the effects of climate change, a relatively limited number of them are directly aimed at investigating the role of vegetation as a mitigating factor in the urban context. This paper focuses on reviewing the research on the role of urban vegetation i… Show more

“…The measures that can be taken by the local government are as follows (Environmental Noise Directive 2002 ; Maffei and Masullo 2014 ; Mahler and Bohli 2015 ; Penton 2016 ; Dimitrijević 2017 ; Jacyna et al 2017 ; Jena et al 2018 ; Boren 2019 ; Ferrini et al 2020 ; EU-European Commission 2020a , b ): Ensuring that the new buildings to be built in the region comply with the "Protection of Buildings Against Noise” regulation. Replacing traditional asphalt pavement with more efficient alternative options (this is more effective than other options in reducing traffic noise), Increasing the number of noise-protected pedestrian zones by restricting vehicle traffic and unloading at certain times of the day, Increasing cycling paths, Regular maintenance of municipal vehicles, In the long term, preferring procurement of hybrid or electric vehicles for municipal services, In the long term, switching to hybrid or electric public transport vehicles.…”

“…Here, stress-response mechanisms help explain how excessive noise impacts cardiovascular, respiratory, immune response and metabolic systems [ 42 ]. In turn, acoustic research shows how structural components of vegetation buffers noise, and demonstrates that dense and diverse planting schemes provide particularly effective noise barriers [ 43 , 44 ]. Although urban populations may not always report strong satisfaction rates with environmental noise (reduction) in areas with greater land cover diversity [ 45 ], the physical processes through which vegetation attributes modify acoustics are nonetheless clear [ 43 , 46 ].…”

“…Thermal analyses in cities should consider all the artificial and natural components interacting with the urban ecosystem. Vegetation [14], tree cover and impervious surfaces [11,15], water bodies [16], surface albedo [17], urban morphology [18] and solar radiation exposure [19] were identified as important indicators able to modify urban microclimatic conditions as they play an important role in the surface energy balance.…”
