Roles of basicity and steric crowding of anionic coligands in catechol oxidase-like activity of Cu(ii)–Mn(ii) complexes

Abstract: Five new heterometallic Cu(II)-Mn(II) discrete trinuclear complexes, [(CuL)2Mn(CH3COO)2] (1), [(CuL)2Mn(NO3)2] (2), [(CuL)2Mn(C6H5COO)(H2O)]Cl (3), [(CuL)2Mn((p-OH)C6H5COO)(H2O)]ClO4 (4) and [(CuL)2Mn(HCOO)(H2O)]ClO4 (5) have been synthesized using a metalloligand, CuL derived from an N2O2 donor...

“…These values indicate an antiferromagnetic interaction between the Cu II and Mn II cations with a magnitude similar to those of previously reported Cu II /Mn II dinuclear complexes with related Schiff bases, 9 and for complex 3, ferromagnetic coupling mediated by the end-on azido bridges 10 between the Mn II cations, resulted in well isolated ground spin states of S = 3/2 for 1, S = 2 for 2 and S = 4 for 3 with a gap of 83, 91 and 22 cm −1 , respectively, to the first S = 3 excited state. In agreement with these data, the magnetization values under the maximum applied field are 3.37Nμ β for 1 (S = 3/2), 5.88Nμ β for 2 (S = 2 for the dimeric entity plus two isolated Cu II cations) or 10.45Nμ β for 3 (S = 4 for the tetranuclear entity plus two isolated Cu II cations).…”

“…The activity of complex 3 , although less than that of 1 , still is significantly high in comparison to the other reported complexes. The presence of a carboxylate group as a coligand in the complex seems to be responsible for this, as was also found earlier . The greater efficiency of these heterometallic complexes is generally ascribed to the cooperative action of the two different metal ions.…”

“…The catechol oxidase and phenoxazinone synthase activities of 1 and 3 in 1/1 (v/v) ACN/MeOH solution were investigated as reported previously by us. , The generation of H 2 O 2 in the process was ascertained by the iodometric method. …”

“…Therefore, designing of suitable coordination compounds for imitating the active sites of bio-relevant metalloenzymes like catechol oxidase has fascinated huge devotion over the years. [27][28][29] Herein, we have synthesized a novel Cu(II) based paddle-wheel compound [Cu 2 (nac) 4 (4-nvp) 2 ] (1) (Hnac=3-(1naphthyl)acrylic acid and 4-nvp=4-(1-naphthylvinyl)pyridine), which possesses the above mentioned properties for multipurpose applications. The compound shows electrical conductivity in the semiconducting regime that exhibits non-linear behavior with good rectification and can be used as Schottky barrier diode.…”
