Roles of Human Endogenous Retroviruses and Endogenous Virus-Like Elements in Cancer Development and Innate Immunity

Hirokazu Katoh,
Tomoyuki Honda

Abstract: Human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) are remnants of ancient retroviral infections in the host genome. Although mutations and silencing mechanisms impair their original role in viral replication, HERVs are believed to play roles in various biological processes. Long interspersed nuclear elements (LINEs) are non-LTR retrotransposons that have a lifecycle resembling that of retroviruses. Although LINE expression is typically silenced in somatic cells, it also contributes to various biological processes. The abe… Show more

“…3 ab). Significantly, we observed certain TEs with expression patterns linked to crucial glioma gene markers like EGFR [29,30] and TE markers including HUERS-P1-int [31], HERVK-int [32], along with immune cell gene markers such as CD74 [33,34] and TE marker LTR2B [35,36] (Fig. 3 b).…”

“…Human endogenous retroviruses (hERVs) are usually not able to replicate but there has been evidence that expression can occur tissue-specifically as well as in malignant cells, as reviewed in [275]. Retroviral elements include HERVs, LINEs, or SINEs [276,277].…”
