Roles of interdecadal variability of the western North Pacific monsoon trough in shifting tropical cyclone formation

Abstract: Consistent with the northward migration of the annual mean latitude of tropical cyclone (TC) lifetime maximum intensity (LMI), the basin-wide mean location of TC formation shifted northward in the western North Pacific (WNP) basin over the past four decades. Whether such a shift was related to the anthropogenic influence is important to understanding the response of TC activity to climate change. Instead of detecting the effects of individual environmental factors on this shift, here we focus on the interdecad… Show more

“…In the WNP, seasonal variations of TC genesis location are mainly affected by the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) and the Western North Pacific Subtropical High (WNPSH) in the lower and middle troposphere (Chen et al., 2004; Chia & Ropelewski, 2002; Hu et al., 2018; Liu & Chan, 2013; Molinari & Vollaro, 2013; X. Wang et al., 2012). The South Asian High (SAH) and the Tropical Upper Tropospheric Trough (TUTT) in the upper troposphere also influence the location of TC genesis (Feng & Wu, 2021; C. Wang & Wu, 2018; C. Wang & Wang, 2021; Wu et al., 2015). The monsoon trough (MT) serves as the main system for representing the EASM in the WNP.…”

“…Particularly, interannual zonal migrations of the NPMT associated with El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) lead to notable zonal shifts in the WNP TC (Wang & Chan, 2002; Wu et al., 2012). On the decadal time scale, the recent westward shift in the WNP TC genesis (Wu et al., 2015) is linked to the decadal westward retreat of NPMT (Feng & Wu, 2022; Huangfu et al., 2017). There is a consensus that zonal migration in the NPMT can infer zonal shift in the WNP TC genesis, and thus the subsequent track and intensity.…”

“…However, large uncertainties are found in future projection of the NPMT (Feng et al., 2023; Wang & Wu, 2018b). This uncertainty is inevitable due to the diversity in internal variability of climate system, emission scenarios, and model response to the radiative forcing (Hawkins & Sutton, 2009).…”

“…Large‐scale wind circulations can provide favorable conditions for TCG (Feng et al., 2022; Lander & Holland, 1993; Ritchie & Holland, 1999; Wang, 2017; Wang et al., 2019, 2022). Through scale interactions with synoptic disturbances, the monsoon trough (MT) and intertropical convergence zone are hypothesized to act a “seeding bed” of WNP TCs (Feng & Wu, 2022; Gu et al., 2022; Wu et al., 2012). The above studies mostly composite synoptic wind circulations conditional on TCG events.…”
