Abstract:Microtubule-based spindle formation is essential to faithful chromosome segregation during cell division. In many animal species, the oocyte meiotic spindle forms without centrosomes, unlike most mitotic cells. Even in mitotic cells, centrosomes are sometimes dispensable for bipolar spindle formation.
