Room temperature prevulcanization of natural rubber latex using xanthate

Abstract: Room temperature prevulcanization of natural rubber latex using a combination of xanthate and a dithiocarbamate accelerator system was investigated. The mechanical properties of the room temperature prevulcanized latex compound was compared with that of a dithiocarbamate system and a commercial prevulcanized latex. Films were prepared from the room temperature prevulcanized latex, commercial prevulcanized latex, and prevulcanized latex prepared by heating latex compound at 55°C. The mechanical properties were … Show more

“…Zn(bxt) 2 /ZDC accelerator combination is found to vulcanize NR at lower temperatures, even at room temperature. 17,18 It is found that the mechanical properties of the NR vulcanizate are improved with decrease in vulcanization temperature. The properties are reported to be maximum when the vulcanization temperature is 608C.…”

“…O-alkyldithiocarbonato ligands, known as xanthates, and their metal complexes have many uses such as metal-ore flotation, [1][2][3][4] vulcanization of rubber, 5 biological remediation, 6 non-linear optical applications, 7 synthetic precursors for the generation of metal sulfide nanoparticles, 8,9 as well as their investigation for possible use as therapeutic agents. [10][11][12][13] The complex bis(O-ethyldithiocarbonato)platinum(II), named thioplatin, is found to have antitumor activity against a number of human tumor lines.…”

“…Zinc alkyl xanthates are known to be effective for the low temperature vulcanization of dry NR and NBR compounds 4–7. Xanthate can also be used for the room temperature prevulcanization of natural rubber latex (NRL) 8. At present, sulfur prevulcanization of natural rubber latex is done by heating the compounded latex for 2–3 h at high temperature (55–60°C) using zinc diethyl dithiocarbamate (ZDC) alone as accelerator, which affects its colloidal stability.…”
