“…In the simple “spray drying” mode, the non‐volatile species which are present in the liquid system are dried or precipitated to the solid state. A successful example of catalyst preparation by spray drying is that of NaAlO 2 microspheres which consisted in the aggregation of relatively small crystallites, exhibiting enhanced surface basicity and outstanding activity in the base‐catalysed synthesis of glycerol carbonate . Spray drying can also be used to disperse active materials onto structured catalyst supports, as demonstrated recently in the case of soot combustion catalysts .…”

“…Only a small number of publications have reported NaAlO 2 as an active catalyst for a limited number of base‐catalyzed reactions (transesterification, isomerization, and condensation) . Recently, we showed that NaAlO 2 is an excellent active phase for the production of glycerol carbonate, especially if produced by spray drying, in the form of aggregates of small crystallites featuring a high density of strong basic sites . The catalyst exhibited record activity in the classical reaction conditions and was also very active at room temperature.…”

“…In its pure solid form, however, NaAlO 2 is highly hygroscopic and corrosive, making its handling problematic. Also, the commercially available form of NaAlO 2 or the solid obtained by simple drying of NaAlO 2 solution has a very low surface area (below 5 m 2 g −1 ) . Blending, supporting, or dispersing this highly reactive component would be a relevant strategy to optimize both catalytic activity and workability.…”
