Root Character Evolution and Systematics in Cranichidinae, Prescottiinae and Spiranthinae (Orchidaceae, Cranichideae)

Abstract: Three of the four structural characters assessed are phylogenetically informative, marking monophyletic groups recovered in the combined molecular-morphological analysis. This study highlights the need for conducting character-based structural studies to overcome analytical shortcomings of the typological approach.

“…Considering the current discussion of the limits of the Cranichideae subtribes (Dressler 1993;Kores et al 1997;Chase et al 2003;Salazar et al 2003Salazar et al , 2009Figueroa et al 2008;Á lvarez-Molina and Cameron 2009), the present study examines the vegetative organs of some of their representatives aiming to identify structural aspects related to their terrestrial habitat that may also prove useful for the taxonomic delimitation of the group.…”

“…Spiranthinae has been supported as a monophyletic group in several phylogenetic studies (Salazar 2003, Figueroa et al 2008, 2009, 2011. All these studies support the existence of four clades: "Stenorrhynchos Clade", "Pelexia Clade", "Eurystyles + Lankesterella Clade" and "Spiranthes Clade".…”
