Rooting the Future; On-Farm Trees’ Contribution to Household Energy Security and Asset Creation as a Resilient Development Pathway—Evidence from a 20-Year Panel in Rural Ethiopia

Abstract: Most rural people globally cook with firewood or other sources of biomass. When biomass that has more productive uses is instead burnt, it is a sign of household level energy insecurity. Burning crop residue and dung for fuel reduces the availability of fertilizer and fodder, as well as directly contributes to poor health outcomes. Ethiopia is largely deforested, and now many of Ethiopia's trees are on farms rather than in forests. The objective of this research is to investigate the relationship of on-farm tr… Show more

“…Growing multiple species also bolstered agricultural resilience against weather extremes (Miewald 1995 ). Furthermore, evidence of territorial social responsibility may explain wide adoption (and success) of the intercropping practice because of its social and environmental sustainability (Morrow et al 2018 ; Rusciano et al 2019 ).…”

“…Most of the studies on energy and resources security, vulnerability, and resilience address either industrialized countries (Gnansounou, 2008;Costantini et al, 2007) or less developed countries (LDC) (Morrow et al, 2018;FAO, 2016). For the LDCs, access to electricity is a major concern.…”

“…Public, global, and environmental health is intertwined with sustainability and development (Di Marco et al, 2020 ). This is particularly true for resource governance, vulnerability, and resilience, where protection from food, energy, and water shocks turns nodal (Gatto and Drago, 2020a ; Morrow et al, 2019 ; Melo and Gatto, 2014 ). Vulnerability to shocks and major events are likely to affect complex systems (Gatto and Busato, 2020 ).…”
