“…In contrast to the microcrustaceans, which have evolved true arctic/alpine species in the plankton, it would be premature to speak of alpine rotifers', as all these stenothermic species may find appropriate conditions also in the winter plankton or in the cold hypolimnion of lowland lakes . One interesting detail to be noted is the complete absence of Hexarthra bulgarica, which is common in the western part of the Alps (Tonolli & Tonolli, 1951) and the Sierra Nevada (Morales-Baquero, 1987 ;Morales-Baquero et al, 1989), and was reported also from high altitude lakes in Asia and America (see Cruz-Pizarro & Morales (1987) for details) . Dumont (1980) denoted this species as a typical high-mountain rotifer .…”

“…The degree of taxonomic exactness was generally insufficient to provide a reliable first inventory of alpine rotifers . Rotifer communities from other palaearctic mountain ranges were investigated by Morales-Baquero (1987), Morales-Baquero et al (1989) in the Sierra Nevada, Margalef (1948), De Ridder (1964, Miracle (1978) in the Pyrenees, and Coussement & Dumont (1980) in the Atlas Mountains .…”

“…Cosmopolite. It is a common species in littoral environments, but scarce in the Iberian Peninsula (Armengol et al, 1975;Guiset, 1976;Morales-Baquero, 1987).…”

“…So far as rotifer associations were taken into account, this happened mainly as part of general zooplankton or limnological studies (Tonolli & Tonolli, 195 1;Eppacher, 1968;Schaber, 1988). Thus, information on benthic rotifers from alpine environments is scarce, though comparable sites were recently examined by Morales-Baquero (1987) and Morales-Baquero et al (1989) in the Sierra Nevada (Spain).…”
