Roughness measurement of paper using speckle

Abstract: Abstract. We present a method of measure of the roughness of the paper based on the analysis of a speckle pattern on the surface. Images of speckle over the surface of paper are captured by means of a simple configuration using a laser, beam expander, and a camera chargecoupled device (CCD). Then we use the normalized covariance function of the fields, leaving the surface to find the roughness. We compare the results obtained with the results obtained with a confocal microscope and the Bendtsen method that is … Show more

“…As a widely used material for printing black and white laser scanning data registration targets, white paper is empirically and theoretically homogeneous to the 632.8-nm laser [31], [32] and can be used to measure intensities at different ranges. In consideration of indoor space limitations and the visible laser employment of Z+F Imager5006i, we designed a new experiment to acquire target point cloud data within a short time interval, in which the environmental light and the heat accumulation of the scanner imposed the least variances on intensity values among targets at different ranges.…”

“…That is why we propose that optical inspection methods, technology enable the use of non-invasive, i.e., not through contact with the surface is completely clean and samples depending on its constitution can be reused [3], [4], [6], [8], [14], and [15]. Since 2009, I have been conducting research in the field of optical metrology and image processing, developing a model for the evaluation of surface roughness in the paper industry, based on texture analysis using co-occurrence matrix of gray levels [23], [24], [25], [26] industrial sectors. Wherefore are plans to extend the field of application to other materials, laminates specifically metallic and nonmetallic used in Panamenian Industry.…”

“…speckle formation by an optical system [1], [2], [10], [11], [16]. To establish an objective comparison between different texture descriptors examined with optical methods used, were considered and measures used confocal microscopy method as our yardstick, which were taken as the dependent variable the simple linear regression model adopted for the comparison and validation of our proposed method and developed [20], [21], [22], [23], [24], [25], [26]. The coefficient of determination " 2 R " was the measure chosen to evaluate the fit of each method.…”
