Abstract-This paper presents a performance evaluation of the scalable video streaming over mobile ad hoc networks. In particular, we focus on the rate-adaptive method for streaming scalable video (H.264/SVC). For effective adaptation a new crosslayer routing protocol is introduced. This protocol provides an efficient algorithm for available bandwidth estimation. With this information, the video source adjusts its bit rate during the video transmission according to the network state. We also propose a free simulation framework that supports evaluation studies for scalable video streaming. The simulation experiments performed in this study involve the transmission of SVC streams with Medium Grain Scalability (MGS) as well as temporal scalability over different network scenarios. The results reveal that the rateadaptive strategy helps avoid or reduce the congestion in MANETs obtaining a better quality in the received videos.Keywords-wireless communications, mobile ad hoc rnetworks, SVC video, scalable video streaming, rate-adaptive video streaming.

Cross-layer Simulation and Analysis for Video Transmission Quality in MANET

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are self-organized dynamic networks populated by mobile nodes. This paper presents the improved cross-layer approach to complement the recent works for video transmission services on MANET. We use a statistical design of experiment and analysis in order to investigate interactions between major factors of each layer effectively with minimizing ns-3 simulation run time. The proposed cross-layer approach considers MANET protocol layers (i.e., physical, network and transmission layers) and an application layer (i.e., a video encoder) as factors simultaneously. In addition, the approach defines an objective video quality metric as a response variable. The result of this paper can be applicable as a preliminary research to design an optimized video transmission application which has ability to adjust controllable factors to dynamic uncontrollable factors.

Modern advancement in efficient and affordable electronic devices has developed a huge range of applications in the domain of wireless networks. An essential problem addressed in this Wireless sensor network is that the nodes communicate with each other or with base station without any network infrastructure or central administration. They can communicate using wireless channels and can exchange data using multiple hops. For efficient and timely delivery of data or messages, reliable routing protocols are required by these wireless networks for communication. Through this paper, a critical comparative analysis is done on popular routing protocols. The protocols on which analysis is performed are Dynamic Source Routing Protocol (DSR), Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector Routing Protocol (AODV) and Destination-Sequenced Distance Vector Routing Protocol (DSDV). These were analyzed depending upon the performance metrics based on Packet loss, Energy Consumed and Average End to End Delay while varying different factor such as number of nodes, simulation time and speed in m/s. The simulator used is NS-2 installed on the Ubuntu (Linux) operating system. Performance evaluation of these three routing protocols have proven that each of three routing protocols can be more optimally and efficiently utilized for specific applications of Wireless Sensor Network taking advantage of the respective merits judiciously.
